How Does a Mortise Lock work?

November 10th, 2009

A mortise lock fits into the door itself, as opposed to a door knob and lock or cylindrical lock, which is then installed directly through a hole drilled into the door. With a mortise lock you are required to skilfully router out the door to enable you to install the lock and hardware.
The mortise lock also has a bolt chamber, which is also fitted into the door frame. The lock uses a strike plate, face plate and lock assembly (door knob, dead bolt and handle) just like any other door handles.
A mortise locks requires the use of a latch and handle system. Some of them also have a sliding bolt mechanism. Most types of knob and latch can be used with a mortise lock. The latch is the handle or door knob that one pulls to slide the bolt back and open the door. To do this the system uses a series of tumblers and key to lock into place. Otherwise the latch will slide back whenever the handle is pulled or turned. To engage the dead bolt, most mortise locks require a simple twist of the knob inside. A cylindrical tumbler and key can be used to slide the bolt back from the outside.
To install a mortise lock you will need a little more skill as it requires to be set into the frame and door itself. This would normally be completed by a skilled joiner or a very competent DIYer. In some cases a mortising bit or router can be used to drill out the channel for the lock. This can also be done by drilling into the door frame with a large drill bit several times and then straightening the slot. The mortise lock is then inserted into the door, and the face plate installed over it. The strike plate is inserted into the door frame in the same way, level with the bolt. A hole is drilled right through the door itself for the key hole. The key inserted right through this hole, without any hardware showing on the outside of the door. There is very little hardware showing that would indicate any lock is installed at all.

How to Stain a Door

October 27th, 2009

If you have just purchased a new set of internal doors and wondered how to stain them, or would like to refresh the look of your existing doors, well look no further Doors-More will now give you a simple step by step guide.

Things you will need to complete the job.

Screwdriver
Brushes
Gloves
Wood Stain
Clean Rags
Sandpaper Medium / Fine
Stripper

If existing doors then remove the door furniture. You should be able to do this with just a screwdriver. Make sure that you keep all the screws and parts together. You will need to re-install all the furniture once the doors have been stained. When removing the hinges you may need someone to hold the door to prevent it falling.

Lay the door over a couple of saw stools or something similar to support the door at both ends.

Wipe the door down so it is free from dirt and dust. If the door is painted, you will need to remove all the layers of paint. Do this with a paint stripper in a well ventilated area. If the door is already stained, remove the stain with a stripper.

To prepare the door to accept the stain the door should be down to the bare wood on all sides, if a new door this will be how it will be supplied to you. Use a fine sand paper to remove any nibs and achieve a nice smooth surface.

Wipe the surface clean and make sure than any dust is removed. Apply the stain of your choice using either a brush or a clean rag. Start will the panels and then the stiles and rails making sure that you follow the direction of the grain, stain slowly and take care not to apply to much stain which is liable to run. Allow the stain to dry completely.

Depending upon the product you use the manufactures of the stain may suggest further coats, if so when the door is completely dry lightly sand and ensure the surface is clean and free of dust and then re apply further coats as before.

Your doors can now be hung.

Things you will need to complete the job.

Scraper & Filler
Cloth and sugar soap

A good weather forecast, a good paint will be touch dry in 6-8 hours but you are best to wait 16-24 hours before applying a second coat, so make sure the weather is on your side for a couple of days.

Use a screwdriver to remove the door handles, plates and lock, depending on the age you may wish to have new furniture see http://www.doors-more.co.uk/store/4-door-handle-sets/ for designs.

Scrape any flaking paint and apply filler to any holes.

When the filler has dried, clean the door well with sugar soap.

Use the sandpaper to smooth the surface. If your door is already painted with gloss paint use medium grade sandpaper to flatten of the sheen.

Always paint in the direction of the grain and paint the side closet to the handle last, this will enable you to open and close the door while you work.

Start with the panels, and then paint the rails and stiles, i.e. the parts that are around the panels holding them in place. Paint slowly and take care not to apply to much paint, which is liable to run.

How to hang a door.

October 12th, 2009

Start by measuring the width and height of the door frame allowing for the necessary clearance. You may not find a door to the exact size so will have to purchase the next size up and trim the edges to fit. Transfer the measurements to the door. Plane equal amounts from the two side edges. Now trimming the height of the door you can use a saw but finish with the plane. Sand all edges with an abrasive paper until smooth.
Two hinges are sufficient but on heavier doors such as fire doors or doors hung in kitchens or bathroom areas where it is humid three hinges would be required. Hinges fit into recesses of an equal depth in the door frame and the stile. Use a very sharp wood chisel with a wide blade for making them. The top hinge needs to be about 250mm from the top of door and the bottom hinge about 250 mm from the bottom of the door. Mark hinge positions with a pencil using the hinge itself to trace the dimensions and hole positions. Cut the hinge recess using a chisel and wooden mallet. Cut the door edge along the outline and to the correct depth. Drill pilot holes in the door for the hinge to fit. Test fit the hinges to make sure they fit correctly.
With the door in the open position, use wedges to raise the door to the required height to clear the flooring. Carefully mark the side of the door through the screw holes on the hinge. Making sure the hinge knuckles are parallel with the frame. Remove door and chisel out the hinge recesses in the door frame in the same way. Put one screw into each hinge to check the door fits neatly. Any adjustments can be made now. When you are satisfied the door is hanging neatly you can fix the remaining screws onto the door. Ensure all hinge screws on the door and frame are tightly fitted.

Traditionally doors have not been seen as a focal point of the house with much more importance being placed on wall decorations and furnishings, however things are changing a door can now be the focal point of any contemporary or traditional room or house.

Folding Sliding Doors or Traditional Patio Doors.

October 8th, 2009

During the last couple of year the popularity of folding sliding doors has increased significantly with many people choosing them not only for new builds but also for replacing older patio doors. Here we look at the reasons why they have become so popular.
Patio doors traditionally were designed to allow better access from a room to the outside world, often featuring full glazing to allow light into a room, the idea that these doors would just open back was very appealing, albeit restrictive in many cases. Patio doors by their design are a two door system and therefore the limit to their size and width is very restrictive due to weight constraints.
This allowed a few manufacturers to test the market with a new concept folding sliding doors, at first the sizes were restricted to standard Patio door sizes 1800mm, 2100mm and 2400mm designed as a 3 door system where the consumer could choose either a left hand or right hand opening. The benefit being that all the doors could be pushed to one side giving total access to the outside without any pillars or posts in the way.
This new concept was an instant success; consumers could see the benefits and the idea were quickly picked up by the tv makeover shows, thus giving the product even more publicity. Almost overnight the concept of folding sliding doors was an instant hit. Very quickly the range of sizes increased to keep pace with customer demands. As well as 1800mm, 2100mm and 2400mm sizes, 3000mm, 3600mm and 4200mm were added to the range giving from 3 doors to 6 door options. The larger options being available in various door configurations, again giving the consumer more choice and variety.
Anyone building a new property could now have the concept of a large glass area secure when closed that would allow the outside world in once opened, in many cases the doors allowed for a large open space giving plenty of access without the need for unsightly posts or pillars.
Without doubt folding sliding doors are a truly inspired lifestyle concept that ingeniously and cost effectively facilitates bringing the outside into the home and extending the interior to the exterior, instantly creating increased living space along with a more salubrious environment in which to both live on a day to day basis and entertain.
